Create your own fall color through an upcoming art class
Creative ways to beat cabin fever may include dabbling in the arts — and crafts.
Local galleries and park districts offer a variety of workshops, events and classes, from novice to professional level, in both classic and updated arts.
Here’s a sampling of what’s happening this fall.
•McCord Gallery and Cultural Center, 9602 W. Creek Road, Palos Park; 708-671-0648; www.mccordgallery.org. To register for classes, call or register online.
Fall Open Studio is from noon to 3 p.m. Fridays to December 14. McCord offers artists a “light and airy space” with easels and tables. Bring your own materials. A five-session punch card is $25.
Fall Beginning Watercolor Session II with Carmelo Schifano will feature watercolor technique in the style of Terry Madden. Patterns will be provided to teach basics and for those who need help with drawings. Classes will be held on Mondays from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Nov. 5 to Dec. 10. Cost is $110 ($98 for members).
Fall Mondays @McCord with Beth Leahy is an open studio class for students at all levels of independent painting to work independently with an instructor available for guidance. Some group demonstrations of technique and supplies will be given. Beginners start with a painting in black and white. Classes are Nov. 12, Nov. 26, Dec. 3 and Dec. 10. Cost is $75 ($70 for members) per session.
Fall Watercolor Session II with John Howard will use a step-by-step approach to painting with watercolors, covering 14 techniques. Both individual and classroom demonstrations will be given. Classes will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Mondays Nov. 5 to Dec. 10. Cost is $110 ($98 for members).
Fall Drawing II with John Howard for beginners and novices will teach the three forms of drawing: gesture, contour and mass. Composition, light and shadow arrangements and perspective will also be covered. Class meets from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursdays Nov. 8 to Dec. 13. Cost is $90 ($80 for members).
Fall Oil Painting Studio Session II with Beth Leahy will focus on the indirect painting method. All levels of students will study transferring drawings to canvas, underpainting, color layer and glazing. Classes are from 9:30 a.m. to noon Tuesdays Nov. 13 to Dec. 11. Cost is $72.50 ($65 for members).
Fall Colored Pencil Technique II with Tony Crnkovich will cover the basic principles of realistic colored pencil art. Portraits will be the main focus but students will have a choice of subject matter. Class meets from 1 to 3 p.m. Thursdays Nov. 29 to Dec. 13. Cost is $55 ($48 for members).

Ladies Night Out will feature a Paint Night for participants 18 and older. B2 Signs & Designs staff members will help participants design and create a custom wood sign for home décor. All materials and instructions are included. No experience is needed. Event will be at 8 p.m. Nov. 3. Cost is $50 ($39 for residents).
Beginning Oil Painting Mini Session allows beginners and amateurs 18 years and older to “dabble” in oil painting. Each class focuses on techniques for different types of paintings. All classes begin with the basics of mixing colors, applying paint and other techniques. Class will be from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Nov. 17. Cost for class and supplies is $33 ($25 for residents).
Drawing with Carol will develop drawing skills for students 18 years and older. Students will use pencil, charcoal, and pen and ink on good quality drawing paper. Classes meet from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesdays Nov. 27 to Dec. 18. Cost is $52 ($40 for residents). Supply list will be attached to receipt.

Beginning Crochet/Knitting is a four-part class for students 12 years and older that teaches skills to complete projects such as scarves, shawls and blankets. Students will be taught to read yarn labels, to understand gauge and to read patterns. For Beginning Crochet bring 200 yards medium weight, light color yarn and size H or J crochet hook. For Beginning Knitting bring 200 yards medium weight, light color yarn and size 8 or 9 straight knitting needles. Class meets from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesdays Nov. 7 to Dec. 5. Cost is $85 ($65 for residents).
Introduction to Crepe Paper Flowers offers participants 18 years and older the opportunity to make “forever flowers.” Students must supply scissors. Class will meet from noon to 3 p.m. Dec. 8. Cost is $51 ($39 for residents).

Calligraphy with instructor Marge Boyd will cover lettering with a pen and unique calligraphy styles done with pen and markers. A list of required supplies is in the office at The Center. Teacher will have pens and paints for sale. The class will meet from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Mondays Oct. 29 to Dec. 3. Cost is $120.
Collage for beginner or intermediate students with instructor April Schabes will experiment with color and composition. Students will create unique mixed media collages. Classes will be from 9:30 a.m. to noon Mondays Oct. 29 to Dec. 3. Cost is $120.
Realistic Acrylic Painting with instructor Sue Flanagan will teach acrylics for landscape painting. Class will be from 9:30 a.m. to noon Nov. 3. All materials will be provided. Cost is $30 plus a $7 materials fee.
Lapidary classes with Larry Rothenberg will turn rocks into polished gemstones, from simple to complex designs. Classes will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Mondays Oct. 29 to Dec. 3 or 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Mondays from Oct. 29 to Dec. 3. Cost is $115. Materials can be purchased from the instructor.
Christmas Folkarts with instructor Lois Lauer will make use of nature’s bounty in four workshops. A decorative craft will be taught each week using fresh evergreens, pine cones, prairie grasses, willow branches and logs. Classes will meet from 1 to 3 p.m. Mondays Nov. 5 to Nov. 26. Cost is $70 plus $15 materials fee.
Winter-themed Luminaries Paper Making Workshop instructor Marilyn VandenBout will teach the use of paper pulp to create a three-dimensional luminary with candle to decorate for the holidays. The class will be from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Nov. 28. Cost is $18 plus a $6 materials fee.

Easy Acrylic Painting with instructor Laurie Snaer will cover the basics of painting with acrylics, the art of color theory and mixing, balance and proportion. No experience is necessary. Classes will be from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Thursdays Nov. 8 to Dec. 20 or from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Fridays Nov. 2 to Dec. 14. No classes Nov. 22 and Nov. 23. Cost is $63 ($54 for residents).

Learn to Draw-Basics and Beyond will teach drawing with graphite and charcoal. Basic to advanced composition skills will be taught, using mini lectures and demonstrations. All materials supplied. Classes will be from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Thursdays Nov. 8 to Dec. 20. No class Nov. 22. Cost is $63 ($54 for residents).
